Classic supermarkets advancing:

Germany: Edeka holding up against discounters

The German trading business Edeka Minden-Hannover knows how to hold up again discount chains such as Aldi and Lidl. In the past year the turnover of the company has increased by 3.7 percent to 7.2 billion Euro.

An easy empty bottle intake, friendly advice at the meat department, short queues at the check out: criteria like this has substantially helped classic supermarkets be "the clear winner" last year, according to Mark Rosenkranz, spokesman of Edeka Minden-Hanover. "Our trade performances have grown more strongly than those of the discounters. This has has convinced customers who don't just look at the price, but at the price-quality ratio." Rosenkranz, who is responsible for around 1600 retail locations and wholesalers between the Dutch and Polish border, believes that Classic supermarkets with their extensive brand assortment and expert advice take away courage from the discounters. An example: Aldi Nord is busy adding more brand name article into its assortment at the moment.

The Berlin Reichelt supermarkets obtained the largest increase in turnover within the group (+6.3 percent), followed by the Edeka supermarkets (+5.4 percent). Edeka discounter Marktkauf grew reasonably little at 2.1 percent. The total group profit of Edeka Minden-Hannover increased from 85 million to 95 million last year.
