Heavy rains in Kashmir caused the Vishow Nallah to breach its banks in the Laisoo Gudder area of Kulgam district, washing away more than 1,000 apple trees. Large sections of orchards were submerged, leaving growers with losses that will take years to recover.
Locals reported that the flooding destroyed standing trees and disrupted harvest preparations. Orchardists in the area rely almost entirely on apple cultivation. "This is our only livelihood. Losing so many trees overnight has devastated us," said one grower, who appealed for immediate government relief.
Farmers explained that the impact will be long-term, as newly planted trees need several years before they can produce fruit. They called on the district administration to carry out a detailed assessment and provide compensation to affected families.
Residents also asked Cabinet Minister Sakeena Masood to intervene and ensure support measures are implemented. They further demanded the construction of a protection bund at Laisoo Gudder to safeguard orchards from future flooding events.
