Jackfruit is increasingly popular in Kerala

Jackfruit has transitioned from being an underappreciated fruit to a global trend. In its raw form, it serves as a vegetable, and its natural properties, such as blood sugar regulation and affordability as a meat substitute, are enhancing its global appeal. The fruit, known for being the largest tree-borne variety, can weigh up to 30–35 kilograms.

James Joseph, who founded Jackfruit 365, highlights the evolution in perception towards jackfruit, recalling times when jackfruit trees were often removed. However, the recent trend shows a significant shift, with jackfruit now being recognized for its health benefits and versatility. This shift is evident in the production of value-added jackfruit products and the increased use of jackfruit in various markets.

Joseph notes the economic potential of jackfruit in Kerala, pointing out that a significant portion of the fruit goes unused. He estimates that only 20% of produced jackfruit is processed and traded, suggesting a vast untapped market. Additionally, jackfruit's natural resistance to pests and its high yield without the need for fertilizers present an opportunity for sustainable agriculture and economic growth in the state.
