Fiji promotes crop diversification to reduce vegetable imports

Fiji's Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways is encouraging farmers to diversify their crops by supplementing sugarcane cultivation with vegetables and root crops to better meet market demand.

Minister Tomasi Tunabuna said the initiative aims to improve farmers' cash flow and increase the supply of locally grown produce, particularly for the tourism industry. He noted that most vegetables used in hotels are still imported, and boosting local production would help lower costs while supporting rural livelihoods.

The Ministry stated it will continue promoting crop diversification programs as part of national efforts to enhance food security and develop more sustainable farming systems.
