China’s Fengjie navel oranges secure export deals in Singapore

Fengjie navel oranges from China are set to appear in overseas supermarket chains following new trade agreements signed in Singapore. The 2025 Global Sourcing Event for Fengjie Navel Oranges took place on October 15, where producers from Fengjie County in Chongqing concluded export deals with buyers from Singapore and Malaysia totaling more than 10,000 tons. The agreements mark closer agricultural cooperation between the two countries and growing international demand for Chinese fruit.

At the signing ceremony, witnessed by Fengjie County Mayor and Deputy Secretary Wu Tao, five exporters from Fengjie—including Chongqing Kuimen International Import and Export—signed contracts with Singaporean companies such as Century Global Pte Ltd and Everfresh Fruits Import Trading. The deals include both Fengjie navel oranges and Xiangtanzi-branded condiments, expanding the region's export portfolio beyond fresh produce. Officials said the agreements demonstrate how agricultural goods from Chongqing are increasingly reaching global markets through formal trade partnerships.

Speaking at the event, Wu Tao described Fengjie County as located in the Yangtze River's Three Gorges Reservoir region, one of the world's eight major navel orange production areas, and China's highest-yielding county per hectare. Fengjie has about 25,500 hectares of citrus orchards, producing an estimated 507,000 tons of navel oranges annually. The industry's total annual output value is around 6.5 billion yuan (approximately US$890 million), with an overall brand valuation of 38.17 billion yuan (around US$5.2 billion), according to local government data.

The region's fruit is noted for its high sugar-to-acid ratio and extended ripening period, which contributes to its flavor balance. Producers attribute this to local cultivation practices that combine traditional growing techniques with modern agricultural management.

Ahead of the signing, business matchmaking sessions were held to align Chinese producers with Southeast Asian distributors on logistics, packaging, and market specifications. "I hadn't heard of Fengjie navel oranges before," said Francis Chua, director of Century Global Pte Ltd. "But after tasting them, I'm confident they'll resonate with our customers. We're planning promotional partnerships with major supermarket chains to introduce them to the market."

The event reflects broader efforts by Chinese agricultural producers to increase exports of high-value fruit and processed food products to Southeast Asia, supported by both local government initiatives and private-sector partnerships.
