According to Avocados Australia's latest "Facts at a Glance Report", Australian avocado growers produced 131,385 tonnes of avocados for FY2024/25, valued at AUD$794 million* (Gross value of production (GVP)).
Volume was slightly lower, but GVP was 22.34% higher when compared to the previous period. Activity is still underway targeting Australia's growth in export markets. However, in 2024/25 Australia exported 14,235 tonnes - 10.83% of total production – representing a 35% decrease in exports when compared with the previous period. This reduction was due to a lighter crop in 2024/25.
Avocados Australia will continue to focus on increasing demand in the domestic and export markets.
According to the Facts at a Glance online report, in 2024/25 Queensland produced the largest volume of avocados – 76,501 tonnes – which was 58% of the total volume produced. This was followed by Western Australia which produced 36,889 tonnes (28% of total volume).
John Tyas, Avocados Australia's CEO, believes one of the key findings in the latest Facts at a Glance report is that the value of production has increased and this reflects the growth in domestic demand and export markets following recent years of heavy supply. Australian avocado growers' dedication and hard work in producing avocados of consistent high quality is contributing to this growth in demand.
"Consumers want a positive eating experience and when we deliver avocados of consistent quality, they are more likely to repeat purchase. Whether it is for breakfast, a snack, for lunch or dinner, when you eat an Australian avocado, you can be confident that it is safe, nutritious and delicious. Australian avocados continue to be highly regarded by consumers in our overseas markets, and our export program will continue to work closely with our overseas partners, importers, retailers and food service businesses to showcase Australian avocados."
Domestically, Australian avocado consumption in 2024/25 was 4.74 kg per person, down from 4.94 kg per person in 2023/24 due to lighter domestic supply. However, Avocados Australia's forecast still expects production to continue to increase over the next few years, with around 170,000 tonnes per annum expected to be produced within the next 2 years.
