A coconut tree in Maradu, Ernakulam, has surpassed its previous record yield, producing 506 coconuts this year. The tree was earlier listed in the Limca Book of Records for producing 350 coconuts in a year.
The tree grows on 9.5 cents (0.038 hectares) of land owned by retired Customs Superintendent George Pullatt. Of the five coconut trees on his plot, four produce standard yields, while one continues to deliver above-average production.
George noted that the higher output also provides additional income from coconut sales. He suggested that even households with limited land could plant two or three coconut trees along with fruit and vegetable crops such as passion fruit.
Urban residents in Kerala are increasingly planting coconut trees despite small spaces, partly to offset the rising cost of coconuts in the market. George added that setting up a small biogas plant can help manage household waste while also producing manure for use in gardens.
