Conference already available, Decana will be soon

Pears from the Netherlands and Belgium make up for Italian shortcomings

"The Dutch and Belgian pear season has started. We are talking about Decana and Conference, which are currently being harvested and will be available until March," reports Stefano Pezzo, owner of Cherry Passion Verona.

"We have been importing Decana and Conference from those areas for ten years now, and imports have always been increasing, hand in hand with the drastic drops in Italian production. In Belgium and the Netherlands, on the other hand, production is growing, and these two varieties confirm this."

The Dutch and Belgian Decana are of very good quality this year, "without any signs of russeting or hail damage. They are not particularly large, while the Italian market would prefer larger sizes, but this lack is compensated for by the excellent aesthetic and organoleptic quality."

"Our customers include big retail chains, wholesale markets, and other packers. The harvesting of Conference pears started a couple of weeks ago, so they are already available. Decana pears are starting to arrive at our warehouse now, so they will be available within a couple of days."

The Dutch and Belgian pears arrive at Cherry Passion in bins, in crates, or already packaged, as required. "Conference pears with not too large grades are welcome in the centre and south of Italy. In the north of Italy, on the other hand, Decana pears are more popular due to their large grade, as are the larger grades of Conference pears."
