Slightly longer California fig season expected

This year's second California fig crop has been slightly slower to come on. "This is great that we're seeing more figs than normal for this time of year. There was also a late start by a few days," says Marc Marchini of J. Marchini Farms.

Along with the late start, this summer has been one of more moderate, and even cooler, temperatures. "It's kind of dragging out the fig season which is nice because we have a little more than we normally have," Marchini says, adding that it also didn't see its peak supply when it normally would during the season.

Right now, J. Marchini Farms is shipping Black Mission, Brown Turkey and Kadota figs.

Supply to start winding down
As for the demand for figs, it's steady. "It's been a good demand year. There has been a lot of interest from retailers and wholesalers," says Marchini. "As supply starts to decrease here in the next few weeks, we should see prices start to pick up a bit. Nothing outrageous but just reacting to that more limited supply."

The company anticipates shipping its California crop until the end of October, weather-permitting–normally it would finish up around early October. "I do still see a lot of green fruit out there which is nice. Sometimes at this time of the year, we see hardly anything so it's looking like it's going to be a nice long season, though if there are any last promotions planned, this is the week to do it because supply will become more limited after this," Marchini says.
