Egyptian spring onion season starting again at Kraaijeveld

"With in-house cultivation, we control the process from seed to customer"

At Kraaijeveld, the homegrown season of Egyptian spring onions is once again arriving. "In mid to late October, the first delivery of the season from Egypt is expected. Cultivation is looking good, and with this, we seem to start the harvest earlier than last year. This early harvest from Egypt offers a fresh start for retail, wholesalers, and processors alike," says buyer Marinus Müller.

"Until this time, we still have good quality spring onions from Germany from our growers. The market is very stable at the moment. Sales are going well with common selling prices around €5 - €5.50 per box," says Marinus.

"For customers in the processing industry, we have special bunching onions available from Egypt: extra cleaned or fully cleaned, so they can be used directly in production processes without additional handling. This ensures that our spring onions are especially attractive to companies with high demands for efficiency and quality."

From seed to shelf
"For us, it's all about the process, which we control from source to customer. We have been working with our own people in Egypt for several years, and they monitor the crops on a daily basis, ensure optimal growing conditions, and carefully select the crop. This ensures that only the best bunching onions reach our customers. We stay in close contact with our growers to keep control over every step of the process, from seed to shelf. This way, we not only provide high-quality spring onions from our own cultivation, but also convenience and reliability for our customers."

"As a company, we have significantly increased our share of spring onions in recent years. It has become a serious product for us in our wide range. Germany does remain the biggest market for spring onions, but we also sell them a lot to markets like Eastern Europe and Scandinavia," Marinus says. Depending on the start of the German spring onion season, the Egyptian spring onion season traditionally runs until about week 14.

"We are ready for a strong and consistent season. Thanks to regular arrivals via Koper and Ravenna, we can deliver several times a week. This ensures that our customers always have fresh products and experience continuity of supply. In addition, it enables us to respond quickly to changing demand and preferences in the market."
