Tajik farmers achieve higher yields despite smaller planting areas

By the end of August, vegetable plantings in Tajikistan covered around 33,000 hectares, of which 26,000 hectares had already been harvested, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. The total output reached about 914,000 tons, including 343,000 tons of onions, 166,000 tons of tomatoes, 121,000 tons of carrots, 111,000 tons of cucumbers, and 125,000 tons of other vegetables.

For comparison, as of September 1, 2024, plantings amounted to nearly 40,000 hectares, with a harvest of over 1.1 million tons. This year's onion and tomato volumes declined, while cucumber production increased slightly.

Potato production followed a similar pattern. In 2025, approximately 36,000 hectares were planted, yielding roughly 252,000 tons from 14,000 hectares harvested to date, compared to 280,000 tons last year. However, yields per hectare improved, from 169 centners in 2024 to 180 centners.

Experts attribute the overall decline in output to reduced planting areas but note that modern agricultural practices have boosted efficiency, allowing farmers to harvest more per hectare.

The government forecasts total 2025 production at around 1.16 million tons of potatoes and 3.29 million tons of vegetables, with onions accounting for the largest share at 867,000 tons. Harvesting is ongoing, and overall output is expected to exceed last year's by 5–10%.
