Blackberry supply expected to grow moving into the fall

There is a steady supply of blackberries from Guatemala right now. "We do expect the blackberry supply to continue getting better through the end of the year, weather permitting," says Katiana Valdes, marketing director for Miami, Florida-based Crystal Valley Foods.

That's because the blackberry season out of Mexico has also just begun. "The volume from Mexico is currently low, but we expect an increase in the supply by the end of September/beginning of October, weather permitting," says Valdes. "Like most fresh fruits and vegetables, our biggest challenge is the unpredictability of the weather that can affect supply and quality throughout the season."

Good blackberry growing conditions
Overall, the supply from both Guatemala and Mexico is similar to last year at this time, and both countries started their seasons this year on time with no major changes. "Currently, the blackberry harvesting conditions in Guatemala are good. We are expecting the same conditions from Mexico starting in October until late May/early June," says Valdes.

As for demand for blackberries, it too is good and is seeing a steady momentum on the movement of the fruit. Generally, blackberry consumption continues to grow thanks to newer, sweeter varieties being grown.
