Mashed potatoes remain a leading comfort food in the United States, but regional and generational preferences show a wider variety of potato-based dishes across the country. A recent survey conducted by the Idaho Potato Commission in collaboration with YouGov asked 3,000 Americans to identify the potato dish most associated with family gatherings in their communities. The results highlight how potato dishes are connected to local traditions and food culture.
According to the survey, mashed potatoes are the most frequently mentioned nationwide. However, responses varied depending on region and demographic group. Rural respondents favored potato salad (67% rural vs. 54% urban) and au gratin potatoes (39% vs. 29%), while urban residents reported dishes such as gnocchi, poutine, and potato tacos.
Generational differences were also clear. Baby boomers largely preferred mashed potatoes (73%) and potato salad (75%), while younger generations showed a broader range of tastes. Gen Z respondents leaned toward potato tacos (11%) and poutine (9%), reflecting different cultural and culinary influences.
