Spanish grapefruit breaks production and export records

The 2024/2025 Spanish grapefruit season, which runs from September 1 to May 31, has closed with positive record data, strengthening the role of this minority citrus, which offers very interesting upward trends.

Total production this season amounted to 102,000 tons, which means that Spain has exceeded the 100,000-ton mark for the first time. Total exports were slightly higher than 72,000 tons, setting a new record. Spanish grapefruit is now consumed in more than 40 countries. However, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland account for 80% of consumption.

6,000 tons are consumed in the Spanish market, and almost 22,000 tons are destined for the processing industry for the production of juice and essential oil. The remaining nearly 2,000 tons is estimated to be wastage.

The EU-27 market is the main destination for Spanish grapefruit. Between September and May, 1 out of every 2 grapefruits consumed is of Spanish origin, which means Spain has 50% of the EU market share. Four years ago, Spain's share was only 36%. However, the market's preference has turned successfully towards Spanish fruit, to the detriment of grapefruit from Turkey, Israel, and the United States, whose volumes in the EU 27 are decreasing year after year.
