Producers from Puebla, Mexico, have launched their inaugural export of fresh nopal, green prickly pear, and red prickly pear to McAllen, Texas, as announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER). This marks the commencement of the export season for Tunas y Nopales Hermanos Vera, a producer group that worked in liaison with the Ministry's State Representation Office (OREF) in Puebla, aligning with international quality and safety protocols.
OREF Puebla facilitated technical support throughout the selection stage, maintaining compliance before transit to the packing facility. This office also orchestrated logistics for border transit, including customs processes on both Mexican and U.S. fronts, culminating in delivery to McAllen's distribution centers.
"The support of the Mexican government is key for us to export. Without their guidance, we would not be able to handle the administrative procedures on our own. We know how to produce and we know the quality of our products, but we need assistance with the paperwork. Today, federal actions are making this possible," stated Nicolás Vera, a producer based in San Sebastián Villanueva, Puebla.
The consignment comprised 22 pallets with 1,087 boxes: 450 of nopal, 448 of green prickly pear, and 289 of red prickly pear, totaling 20 metric tons headed to the U.S.
SADER forecasts at least eight more consignments for the season. This initiative aligns with the government's food sovereignty strategy and efforts to empower local farmers. The exports aim to elevate Puebla's status as a national leader in the export of Mexican agricultural products, adhering to international market standards.
