The Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) plans to release three new durian varieties in the upcoming two years. According to Datuk Dr Mohamad Zabawi Abdul Ghani, Mardi's director-general, several hybrid durians are under evaluation to determine potential new clones.
At a recent Duriotourism event, Dr. Mohamad stated, "We're assessing their suitability for planting in different locations. Apart from Mardi Kuala Kangsar, we're also developing hybrids at Mardi Jerangau in Terengganu. The names and codes are still being finalised and will be announced at the official launch."
Dr. Mohamad also discussed the MRDI Super 88 (MS88) hybrid, which will receive a new branding. Currently, about 13,000 MS88 durian trees are under Mardi's complete care throughout Malaysia. He remarked, "Some trees are now between two and three years old, so in the next five to six years, they should be ready for wider commercial distribution."
