Graham Povey - Premier Foods Wholesale:

“It is all coming together, and we have a good group of products going forward"

Jameela avocados are at the start of the Rwandan season, with small volumes being harvested and exported to the UK.

"From September, we have 2 containers per week programmed, but the Rwandan season will start to ramp during September, when we should be exporting from 5-8 containers per week," said Graham Povey from Premier Foods. "Prices for Rwandan avocadoes will be very competitive due to Tanzania and Kenya being closed."

"We have a strong team on the ground in Rwanda, and all our avocados are sourced from our own exclusive partnership farms, and we can expand to source from neighbouring farms if required. We bring our guys from Tanzania to do the packing. One of the aims behind the Jameela brand was to create employment for locals."

Expanding range
In addition to avocados, the Jameela range now also includes fine beans, mangetout, and sugar snaps, which are air freighted to the UK. The company is looking at planting tender stem broccoli and chilli, Birdseye and green varieties. They have also started to source passionfruit, which they are already exporting.

"It is all coming together, and we have a good group of products going forward. We can also source some Fuerte avocados for our customer who requires these."
