The Dominican Republic has secured market access for six agricultural commodities—bitter orange, pineapple, lime, avocado, banana, and plantain—in the Bahamas. This announcement comes from the Dominican Embassy in Jamaica, which also represents interests in the Bahamas. The process spanned nearly two years, involving joint sanitary inspections and regulatory coordination.
The Bahamas Agricultural Health and Food Safety Authority has approved. This move was supported by the Dominican Ministries of Agriculture and Foreign Affairs, with leadership from Ambassador Angie Martínez, appointed as the first Dominican envoy to The Bahamas in 2023. The addition of these products follows the recent commencement of Dominican egg exports to the Bahamas.
The Dominican Republic aims to further establish itself as a dependable supplier within the Caribbean region. Ongoing initiatives include efforts by the embassy to obtain approval for exporting more than 80 different Dominican products, covering categories such as fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, seafood, and processed goods.
The Bahamas represents a strategic market due to its substantial demand for food imports and a burgeoning tourism sector. The expansion into this market aligns with a broader strategy to enhance trade relations and economic partnerships in the region.
