Tom Leenheer (Van Ooijen Citrus): "Customers switch to new mandarin varieties later each year"

"Strong lemon sales driven by good weather"

The overseas citrus season is in full swing at Van Ooijen Citrus in Ridderkerk. "Lemon sales are going extremely well at the moment due to the nice weather. Sales of other citrus fruits are a bit slower, partly because there is a lot of summer fruit available. I expect lemon demand to remain stable and anticipate good demand for juicing oranges toward the end of July," says Tom Leenheer.

"In Argentina, the lemon harvest has already finished in many regions. Our supplier will continue for another two to three weeks before wrapping up the season," Tom explains. "In addition, we are receiving lemons from South Africa, Uruguay, and Chile. I expect supplies from these origins to continue for at least another five to six weeks. Lemon demand is currently very strong, especially thanks to the good weather."

"The tangerine harvest is also progressing well. We are mainly sourcing from South Africa. This week, we are starting with Nova, RHM, and Tango varieties. The first Nadorcott and Orri from South Africa are also already on the horizon. Minneolas are taking a bit longer to arrive from South Africa; we expect to start with those at the end of the month. A trend in the mandarin market is that consumers are waiting longer each year to switch to new mandarins, preferring to hold off for later varieties like Tango, Nadorcott, and Orri."

First Uruguayan Navels
© Van Ooijen Citrus BV"We also source grapefruit from South Africa. It's a small product for us, but the quality is very good at the moment. As for oranges, we mainly source Navels from South America. Argentine Navels have been on the market for about two weeks, and this week we also started with the Uruguayan ones. The quality is excellent, which is why our customers return to us every year."

"Next week, we will begin with the first Salustiana from Uruguay, a variety that consistently performs well in sales for us. The first South African Valencia varieties will be loaded for us next weekend, and we expect to start with them at the end of the month. Sales of table and juicing oranges are currently steady, despite the abundance of summer fruit on the market."
