In Dhaka, the cost of vegetables, onions, and potatoes has escalated. Except for some goods, the price for most vegetables exceeded Tk 80 per kg. Notably, teasel gourd was priced at Tk 120, and a range of vegetables including long-yard bean, bitter gourd, country bean, sponge gourd, and snake gourd saw prices between Tk 80-100 per kg, marking an increase of Tk 10-20 per kg within a week.
Brinjal was available for Tk 70-100 per kg based on quality, and moringa was priced between Tk 140-180 per kg. Papaya, typically the most affordable vegetable, reached record prices of Tk 75-85 per kg, attributed by traders to increased demand during the warmer weather.
Dulal Patwary, a merchant at Rayerbazar-Beribandh wholesale market, noted that papaya demand has doubled due to the heat, despite steady supply levels. He mentioned that the wholesale price of papaya rose from Tk 38-45 to Tk 68-70 per kg in two weeks. Patwary also highlighted that the production of summer vegetables has been affected by the lack of rainfall in many districts for a month, leading to significantly higher farm-level prices compared to previous years. Furthermore, the cost of local seasonal onions has risen by Tk 5-10, now retailing at Tk 70-85 per kg.
