To swerve as primary entry point into the EU for perishables

IAG Cargo expands its perishables facility in Madrid

IAG Cargo, the cargo division of International Airlines Group, has recently allocated €1.5 million towards the enlargement of its temperature-controlled perishables facility in Madrid, Spain. This investment is part of a broader €12 million investment in the Spanish hub over the past six years. The facility, serving as the primary entry point into the EU for perishables, benefits from Madrid's strategic position for distribution across Europe, especially for produce from Latin America. The expansion increases the facility's capacity by 45%, adding 1,340 square meters of temperature-controlled space. This space is equipped with the largest cooling chambers at Madrid airport, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of IAG Cargo's cold chain operations in Europe. These chambers are monitored continuously to ensure optimal conditions for temperature-sensitive goods.

Fernando Terol Armas, Director of Spanish Hub and Operations at IAG Cargo, emphasized the investment's role in bolstering service quality and capacity for perishables, facilitating the link between Latin America and Europe. Ramon Rey, International Director of Eurobanan, highlighted the expansion's positive impact on the distribution of premium quality fruits and vegetables across Spain. The facility's expansion is poised to benefit the import of various perishable goods, including asparagus from Peru and Los Angeles, papayas from Brazil, mangos from the Dominican Republic, meat from Argentina and Uruguay, and seafood from Chile.
