Thailand on track to export around one million tons of durians

Thailand is on track to export around one million tons of durians, aiming for a value of approximately 130 billion baht ($3.5 billion) this year. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, following the directives of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, is developing regulations to curb the sale of unripe or substandard durians. This effort includes establishing dry weight standards for different durian varieties: 32% for Monthong, 30% for Chanee, and 28% for Kra Dum. The goal is to enhance the fruit's quality and its export potential.

Thailand has also entered into a memorandum of understanding with China, aimed at fostering stable prices for its tropical fruit exports, including durians and mangosteens. This agreement covers the importation of about 20,000 tons of these fruits, valued over 3 billion baht ($82.44 million), from Thailand by China from April to June this year. With durian exports generating 120 billion baht in revenue last year and Thailand producing 900,000 tons of durian annually—two-thirds of which are exported primarily to China—the sector is vital for the country's economy.
