India lifts ban on onion exports to Sri Lanka

The Indian High Commission in Colombo announced the lifting of the export ban on onions to Sri Lanka. This decision allows for the export of up to 10,000 tons of onions as per the notification from India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade. The move is part of India's Neighbourhood First policy and coincides with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations in Sri Lanka.

Previously, India had extended its ban on onion exports indefinitely, impacting prices in several countries reliant on Indian onions, including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Nepal, and the UAE. Despite the ban, India had plans to supply onions to Sri Lanka and the UAE, alongside other essential commodities to the Maldives. Additionally, on April 3, India permitted an extra supply of 10,000 tons of onions to the UAE, emphasizing the Gulf country's priority status with New Delhi. India, as the leading exporter of onions, contributed significantly to the Asian onion market.
