Mango fervor in Ahmedabad: retail prices have surged

In Ahmedabad, the onset of mango season heralds the consumption of nearly 300 tons of mangoes daily, including a notable 100kg of Ratnagiri Alphonso. Retail prices have surged, with varieties exceeding Rs 200 per kg. Anticipation grows for the kesar mangoes, expected to alleviate the price surge with a predicted supply leading to a reduction in prices to Rs 600 for a 10-kg box, a significant drop from the current Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,300.

The city, in peak season, sees over 500 tons of daily mango consumption, offering a diverse range including Alphonso, totapuri, payari, badam, and kesar. Ratnagiri Alphonso, particularly prized, is retailed at Rs 800 per kg, with wholesale rates at about Rs 150 per kg. Contributions from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka enrich the variety, with expectations of price reductions as the season advances. Despite high prices, enthusiasts remain committed, with some leveraging lower prices at specific markets. The anticipation for kesar mangoes highlights the community's enduring passion for this seasonal fruit.
