Prices of yams, Irish potatoes, and fruits skyrocket in Maiduguri

In Maiduguri, Borno State, the escalating costs of yams, Irish potatoes, and fruits have significantly impacted residents' choices for breaking their fast during Ramadan. The surge in prices has led to a decrease in sales for vendors and has pushed buyers to seek alternative food options due to affordability issues.

Visits to various markets revealed that the prices for these staples have nearly tripled. One consumer expressed frustration over the price hike, noting the insufficiency of a N3,500 measure of potatoes that previously cost N2,000. Consequently, residents have resorted to less expensive local dishes or staples like rice.

Sellers attribute the price increase to market dynamics, with Samaila Dan Jigawa considering a shift to sweet potatoes due to the price jump from N40,000 to N55,000 per bag of Irish potatoes. The community calls for governmental intervention to alleviate the economic strain.
