The influx of Egyptian produce into the Canadian market saw a remarkable surge, more than doubling from the previous year's figures. This trend not only underscores Canada's role as a burgeoning hub for Egypt's export diversification—historically concentrated on the EU, the Middle East, and Russia—but also highlights its potential as a strategic trade partner.
Throughout the year, Canada's importation of Egyptian vegetables and fruits soared to nearly 20,000 tons, marking a significant 144% increase from the prior year. Egypt successfully expanded its export footprint across a broad spectrum of commodities.
A substantial boost in exports to Canada was notably achieved in the citrus sector. Egyptian exporters amplified their orange shipments ninefold, reaching 7.6 thousand tons, and augmented lemon exports by 6.5 times to 2.7 thousand tons. Additionally, there was a 45% increase in frozen vegetable exports, totaling 2.5 thousand tons. Egyptian pomegranates and cherimoya fruits also witnessed a robust growth trajectory, with exports climbing from 600 tons to 1,000 tons.
The sole downturn was observed in the export of frozen strawberries, which experienced a 17% decline, dropping to 1.8 thousand tons.
In terms of smaller-scale supply categories from Egypt to Canada, the trend remained positive. Egypt managed to bolster its export volumes in 2023 across various segments, including fresh beets, mangoes, garlic, grapes, mandarins, grapefruits, dates, and both fresh and dried onions, along with other dried vegetables.
Despite these impressive export growth rates, Egypt did not rank among the top suppliers of vegetables and fruits to Canada, placing 18th in the country rankings. However, the active expansion of Egyptian exporters into the Canadian market constitutes a noteworthy accomplishment. Canada is recognized as one of the world's largest importers of a wide array of vegetables and fruits and is known for its stringent quality standards for imported produce. The successful penetration of this market by Egyptian exporters signifies a commendable milestone in international trade relations.
