2023-2024 Chilean cherry season comes to a close with positive results

The 2023-2024 Chilean cherry season has come to a close with positive results, according to people in the sector. Claudia Soler, executive director of the Chilean Fruit Committee's Cherry Committee, highlighted the quality of Chilean cherries and how well they have been received by consumers, despite an initial drop in export volumes due to spring rains. Special emphasis has been placed on the importance of quality for the sustainable development of the industry.

Regarding exports, a total of 413,979 tons have been shipped to various global markets; a very similar figure to that of the previous season. Notably, exports to China, including Hong Kong, have reached a new record, with 377,000 tons, 3.3% more than last season. The Far East has been the main recipient of Chilean cherries, followed by the United States, Latin America, Europe, Canada and the Middle East.

The Lapins, Santina, Regina, Sweet Heart and Bing are among the most exported varieties. The Chilean industry exports more than 36 cherry varieties, including small volumes of new early varieties such as the Meda Rex, Sweet Aryana or Royal Lynn.

There has been a growth of air freight, especially for exports to China, while maritime and land shipments have experienced a slight decline. Iván Marambio, president of Frutas de Chile, has highlighted the Chilean fruit industry's ability to face challenges and maintain the quality of its fruit, as well as the importance of Chilean cherries in markets like China, where it has become a symbol of good wishes and fortune during the Chinese New Year.
