Counterseasonal produce at Granfrutta Zani

The red plums campaign is in full swing

There is good feedback for counterseasonal red plums from South Africa, even though the peak is expected from early April. Antonio Zani, sales manager at Op Granfrutta Zani, reports that "we started selling two weeks earlier than 2023 and demand has been lively from the beginning."

"We are pleased with both the variety and with the feedback we are receiving from supermarket chains. Plums are a niche product this time of year, nevertheless volumes are growing. Two-colored varieties with a light-colored flesh will join red varieties in a few weeks' time."

The season has been better than 2023 so far. "Both organoleptic quality and grades are benefiting from this. The varieties available at the moment have a red peel and red flesh. They boast a high Brix level (sugar content) and a good balance with the acidic part. This time of year, people buy plums only if they are really good. They are conquering space on supermarket shelves precisely thanks to their qualities."

This year, plums from South Africa have become available in late January and will continue until mid-May. They arrive in Rotterdam via sea. "Large grades, premium line, nice flavor and only certain varieties: these are the elements that characterized our counterseasonal imported plums."

Different sizes are available. Many prefer 30x40 crates (5 kg, two layers), otherwise there are single layers in 30x40 crates, 40x60 crates or 500 gram punnets. "We can meet all kinds of requests."
