Chilean cherry prices rise in Vietnam due to decreased imports

In Vietnam, a notable increase in the cost of Chilean cherries has been observed, with current prices approximately 10% higher than the previous year, reaching VND600,000 (US$24.4) per kilogram. This surge is attributed to a reduction in import volumes. A survey conducted in Ho Chi Minh City revealed that the majority of cherry imports originate from Chile, with additional supplies coming from Australia and the United States.

Specifically, 3JD cherries, measuring 30-32mm in diameter, are retailing for VND599,000 per kilogram and VND580,000 for bulk purchases at a specific fruit store in Phu Nhuan District.

Meanwhile, 2JD cherries, with a diameter of 28-30mm, are priced at VND569,000, and smaller variants are available for around VND250,000-300,000. The price escalation, ranging from 5-10% compared to last year, is also evident in Hanoi, with larger cherries being sold for VND600,000. The price differential is largely due to the lower quality and higher susceptibility to damage of the smaller cherries. According to a store manager in Phu Nhuan District, "This year's supply is lower than previous years. Coupled with increased shipping costs, the prices are up 10%." Last year, Chile's export volumes to Vietnam ranged between 800-1,000 tons, marking a 16% increase from 688 tons in 2022, as reported by the Chilean Fruit Exporters Association.
