Santiago Vázquez, director of La Vega de Cieza:

"If the weather remains favorable, we will kick off the stone fruit campaign in Murcia 10 days ahead of schedule"

The 2024 stone fruit campaign is approaching in Murcia, where the blossom started about 10 days earlier than in the previous campaign.

"Last year, we started the stone fruit harvest in the Vega Alta de Murcia between May 5 and 7, but this year, if the weather conditions remain favorable, we expect to start with the harvest on April 26 or 27," says Santiago Vázquez, director of La Vega de Cieza.

"This is one of the areas with the highest concentration of stone fruit production in Murcia, and where, on average, the blossom starts 10 days ahead within a 30-kilometer radius," says the head of this Murcian producing and exporting company.

While an early blossom entails a greater risk of frost damage, Santiago Vázquez says that "as we move into March, the riskiest period is left behind. Moreover, no intense cold is expected in the coming weeks."

For the time being, the acreage devoted to stone fruit cultivation in the Region of Murcia remains quite stable. "A slight lack of generational replacement is starting to be observed in the area, but for now, it is not really significant," says the director of La Vega de Cieza.
