The Mediterranean region is grappling with an unprecedented drought, significantly impacting southern Italy, Spain, Malta, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. This phenomenon, characterized by long-lasting, above-average temperatures and scant precipitation, was highlighted in a report by the European Drought Observatory (EDO).
Notably, the drought's severity during winter raises alarms over its effects on agriculture, ecosystems, and the availability of drinking water and energy. Furthermore, forecasts suggest a warmer spring for southern Italy, Greece, the Mediterranean islands, and northern Africa, exacerbating the situation. The EDO's findings underscore the urgency of climate mitigation to curb the risks of prolonged droughts and the necessity for adaptive water management strategies in agriculture and drinking water sectors to combat the escalating challenges posed by global warming.
