Chilean exporter delights China with sweet sugar plum 'candy'

Following a challenging cherry season, Olivar Export, a Chilean exporter, is thrilled to ship delightful 'candy' to China in the form of sugar plums. Matias Fernandez, Commercial Manager at Olivar Export, expresses satisfaction, noting, "While the Chinese market's fervor for sugar plums may not match last year's peak, we remain committed to delivering top-notch quality."

This season Olivar Export made new packaging for their Sugar Plums.

He says the first batch of sugar plums encountered slightly lower brix levels attributed to Chile's weather, but subsequent shipments boasted higher brix content. "Thanks to Olivar's advanced brix selector technology, distinguishing them as the preferred choice." Fernandez underscores the importance of meeting Chinese consumers' expectations for irresistibly sweet sugar plums, likening them to candy.

The sugar plum season in China is fleeting, spanning a mere three to four weeks. "Despite starting a week later, our priority remains delivering the highest quality fruit with optimal brix levels. However, adverse weather conditions have posed challenges, resulting in diminished fruit yields and delayed brix attainment. Yet, Olivar's adept use of the brix Selector ensures the delivery of premium fruit, solidifying our position among the top 10 exporters of sugar plums, with plans to ship over 140 containers this season," Fernandez explains.

Founded in 2012, Olivar Export has evolved into a family-owned company specializing in exporting Chilean stone fruits. "While we diversify our offerings to include persimmons, kiwis, and citrus fruits, sugar plums and cherries remain our flagship exports to China," Fernandez affirms, highlighting their commitment to expanding into new markets while maintaining a stronghold in China.

Testing shipment to North America
Exploring opportunities beyond China, Olivar Export initiated trial shipments of sugar plums to the US market a few seasons ago, catering primarily to the Asian community on the West Coast. Encouraged by positive feedback, plans are underway to introduce sugar plums to Canada, targeting the Asian demographic.

Fernandez emphasises, "Despite weather-related challenges hindering volume expansion, Olivar's dedication to quality remains unwavering, backed by extensive research and development efforts spanning eight seasons. Our their meticulous approach to product development, leveraging multiple R+D sites across Central and South Chile to ensure the timely delivery of superior fruit varieties to global consumers."
