Southern Fruits International, a prominent cherry producer in New Zealand, is set to dispatch upwards of 340 tonnes of its luxury Beyond brand cherries globally this summer, marking a significant increase from last year's figures. These cherries, heralding from expansive orchard developments in Central Otago, are entering their second commercial year. "We've had excellent pre-season interest from existing and developing markets in Asia and new markets in the Middle East and the United States. All the signs are there for a positive season," commented Sharon Kirk, the company's founder and marketing manager.
The anticipation for a fruitful season is bolstered by favorable pre-season conditions and the trees' maturation, which are now three to four years old. "The trees are now three to four years old and about halfway to being in full production," Kirk noted, highlighting the potential for a harvest rich in fruit size and sugar content. The harvest, which began with early varieties, will extend until late January or early February, weather permitting.
In addition to broadening its reach in Asia, the company is making inroads into the United States and the Middle East, with the Chinese market showing a growing interest in smaller fruit sizes and packaging options. Southern Fruits International also caters to the domestic market through online sales and partnerships with local retailers, ensuring New Zealanders have access to premium Central Otago cherries for the Christmas season. "We've had excellent demand and fruit will continue to be available for online purchase right throughout the season," Kirk added.
