A record volume of cherries has been exported via the TPS

The South Pacific Terminal of the port of Valparaiso (TPS) has achieved a significant milestone this season. So far in the 2023-2024 season, a record more than 213,000 tons of cherries have been exported via the TPS. This is 15% more than in the previous year surpassing the previous 185,000 tons record.

The biggest increase in transfers took place in the cherries exported in reefer containers, which increased by 27% over the last season, reaching 211,810 tons. This figure highlights the growing demand for cherries in the Asian market, especially as China celebrates the New Year.

This season, 41 ships have transported cherries from the TPS, mainly to the Far East, which accounts for 96% of exports. The remaining 4% is sent to Europe and North America.

Oliver Weinreich, the general manager of TPS, said that the current cherry season was a little longer than the previous one, which allowed them to have more ships with high container capacity on the direct route to Asia. "This is a big challenge for our terminal. At the peak of this season, we had ships moving historic quantities of cherries, particularly in January when there were shipments of the order of 1,100 to 1,400 containers per ship. This good result reinforces our commitment to Chilean fruit exporters, the entire chain of Valparaiso's port system, and to delivering an excellent service to all our customers so they continue to prefer this port for their operations."
