During Fruit Logistica 2024, the Dutch cooperative ZON and seed company BASF | Nunhems signed a collaboration agreement. They want to jointly create a strong, growing market position in retail, processing, and food service for the new 'round Intense' tomato.
The 'round Intense' tomato combines the well-known 'plum Intense' tomato's unique traits in a round variant. The 'Intense' properties, firm flesh, easy to cut, and very little moisture loss during and after cutting are retained. With its larger diameter than the 'Plum Intense', this variant opens up new applications, such as a hamburger topping.
"Given the 'Plum Intense''s market position, we, as ZON, are already well positioned, which enables us to develop the market for this new product," says a cooperative spokesperson.
