Ladakh's apricot farmers express concern over unusual dry winter

Ladakh's winter is drawing to a close without the usual snowfall, causing concern among local apricot farmers. Sadiq Hardassi, an apricot grower from Hardas village in Kargil district, is among those worried about the impact of the dry spell on the crop. "No snow means a death blow to the apricot trees," he said.

Apricot farming in the high-altitude region of Ladakh traditionally relies on snow for irrigation. The absence of snow is thus posing a significant challenge to the cultivation of this vital crop. "Farmers of Ladakh particularly from Kargil district are very much worried because of the topography of the area. Farmers know that they won't be able to manage irrigation for apricot orchards in Spring time when it doesn't snow, or snows less, during winter," Sadiq explained.

Ladakh's apricot orchards are renowned for their robust and flavorful produce, but the lack of snow and dry conditions are disrupting the fruit's natural growth cycle. This is affecting both the quality and quantity of the harvest. Mohammad Jawed, another apricot farmer, echoed these concerns, stating that the current dry weather may affect the health of the apricot trees.
