Chilean fresh fruit shipments between January and November 2023 decreased in volume and grew in value

According to Odepa's most recent report, during the January-November 2023 period, Chile exported 2,947,000 tons of fruits worth USD 6.889 billion FOB. Compared to the same period of 2022, the export volume decreased by 5.4% but the value increased by 10.8%.

The country exported 2,306,000 tons of fresh fruit for a value of USD 5.041 billion FOB, i.e. 73% of the total value achieved by fruit exports in the aforementioned period. The volume of fresh fruit exports decreased by 6.6% but their value increased by 12.3% over the same period of the previous year.

The main fresh fruit species exported in this period was the cherry, with an export volume of 307,000 tons worth USD 1.862 billion FOB, accounting for 57.8% of the total value of fresh fruit exports in the aforementioned period. The volume of cherry exports increased by 5.3% and the value by 17.2% over the same period of 2022. China was the main destination, accounting for 90.8% of the total value of Chilean cherry exports.

Cherries were followed by table grapes, with 495,639 tons worth USD 903.2 million FOB, which accounts for 20.4% of the total value of fresh fruit exports. The volume of table grape exports decreased by 18% and their value fell by 5% compared to the same period of the previous year. The main destinations in this period were the USA (44.6%) and China (14.4%).

Apples ranked third with shipments of 467,863 tons worth USD 500.0 million FOB, which accounts for 11% of the total value of fresh fruit exports. There was a 20.2% decrease in the volume shipped and a 1% decrease in value over the same period of the previous year. The US was the main destination accounting for 33.2% of the total value of apple shipments. It was followed by Colombia (which accounted for 13% of the value), and Brazil (9.36%).

Blueberry ranked fourth with shipments of 74,807 tons worth USD 343 million FOB, which accounted for 7% of the total value of fresh fruit exports. There was a 19% decrease in the volume shipped and a 7.0% fall in value compared to the same period of the previous year. The main destinations were the US (45.1%) and the Netherlands (17%).
