Mexico: Asparagus exports amounted to 5.8 million dollars

After having contacted international importers of asparagus, Mexican producers managed to make sales for 5.8 million dollars in the short and medium terms.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, foreign buyers that visited Mexico met with representatives of the Association of Producers of Vegetables of Yaqui and May (APHYM), the Association of Producers of Fruits and Vegetables of Caborca de Sonora, the Agricultural Council of Baja California, and the Asparagus and Vegetables of the Bajío de Michoacan, among others.

The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) stated that they had also contacted different companies, such as the Gefersan, Horticolas del Desierto, Figueroa Aviña Agricultural Group, La Cima Produce, Grupo Agricola El Laurel, Esparagos de Ensenada, Agrizar, CarGoldMex, Agroparque Santiaguillo de Flores, Vegetales del Bajio, and the San Marcos Strawberry and Vegetable Production Society.

The general coordination of International Affairs and the Agricultural Counseling of Mexico in Central America said that they had scheduled business meetings between the Mexican producers and the commercial director for Latin America and representative of Harvest Sensations, Gonzalo Cilloniz, with the support of staff from the state delegations. The meetings took place in the offices of the associations and Mexican companies.

The general coordinator of International Affairs of the agency, Raul Urteaga Trani, said that Mexico was the biggest exporter of asparagus in the world, and that it made most of its sales to the United States, the nation that acquires the highest international volume of this product.

He stressed that agricultural food trade with that nation continued to grow, particularly in relation to fresh products, as 20 of the 25 main agricultural food products in Mexico were still fresh products.

The most demanded products in February 2018 were tomatoes, avocado, strawberry, pepper, berries (blackberries and raspberries) and asparagus, Sagarpa added in the report.
