Italy: The satsuma and lime season at OP Red Co.P

"The Satsuma Maiyagawa tangerine and lime season is starting and these are the first Italian citrus fruits to be available after the summer period. Despite the fact that they are not easy to manage due to their green colour, more typical of unripe fruit, limes continue to do well both in Italy and Germany. They were sold both loose and packaged to enable consumers to immediately identify the unique characteristics of the produce," explains Stefano Restuccia, sales manager of OP Red Co.P.

Restuccia also adds that consumers are gradually getting to know Satsumas. Some green colour on the peel does not mean it is unripe, as the peel normally tends to vary between yellow and green.

Limes are an innovative product that ripens between 15th September and 30th October. "We sell it in 200 gram trays in Italy while, for Germany, we preferred a 2.5 kg packet."

The company is a leading producer and trader of a wide number of products, including Tarocco, Moro and Sanguinello citrus and top-quality lemons. It chose to diversify its productions to be available on retailer shelves at least ten months a year. It owns 700 hectares of land between the provinces of Catania and Syracuse and managed to continue increasing its sales thanks to trusted retail partners.

"Over the next few years, we will focus on marketing and communication. We believe the agricultural sector is one of the most strategic, especially in a season like Sicily."

"All our products are processed in cutting-edge lines and packaged with labels reporting that they are 100% untreated Italian fruit."

"Results in terms of sales and feedback are excellent, especially considering it is only the third year we are selling limes. Demand is increasing and sales prices are appreciated. 2KR lemons will become available on 14th October."

As regards the new citrus fruit season, OP Red Cop is expecting an increase in sales as has set up commercial relationships with another two Italian retail chains.

Sales abroad are increasing every year, both in terms of volumes and turnover. This is because consumers are more aware about quality and due to the specific programming carried out according to demands from commercial partners.

The Op is also working with a marketing and communication agency to develop a new brand for the packaging of products and promotion of commercial partnerships.

"In 2017, we want to increase the volumes of Pgi and organic lemons (both destined to German retailers), as we have already reached considerable quantities of late clementine (March-April) and navelina varieties for the Italian market."
