Research reveals best white asapargus varieties for warm climates

Optimal use of Limgroup range
In addition to choosing the right plot and preparing the soil, deciding which variety of asparagus to grow is a crucial decision that should be taken before the new plot is planted.

Limgroup has categorised asparagus growing according to the cultivation method and product specific characteristics. Not all varieties can be grown in all conditions.

According to Limgroup, the best results are obtained when growers use varieties that they have trialled specifically for their particular region.

Many factors influence the choice of a specific variety such as the potential market, specific grower requirements, soil properties etc. This article provides information about white asparagus varieties shown to be best for production in warmer climates.

White asparagus varieties for warm climates
  • Vitalim is the best choice for early harvesting. Vitalim is a very early variety with excellent yields. Vitalim is suitable for forced early cultivation and produces high quality, thick spears.
  • Maxlim is a variety with an extremely high production potential, excellent quality and a good thickness. Maxlim is a reliable yielding variety for the early-middle segment. The variety has very tightly closed tips and low sensitivity to hollow stems.
  • Terralim is a slightly later variety than Vitalim and has very good spear thickness. Terralim combines early production with particularly high, class 1 yields. It is also suited to forced early cultivation methods. The uniform product has tightly closed tips and almost no susceptibility to pink discolouration and physiological rust.
  • Grolim is the market standard and offers huge versatility. Grolim is a reliable yielding variety for Mediterranean climates and produces extremely well in the second half of the season.
