Peruvian agricultural shipments to other countries in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) bloc, in 2015, totalled US $2,545 million, i.e. 3.8% more than in 2014, stated the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri).
Between 2011 and 2015, national agricultural exports to the Asia-Pacific bloc had an average growth rate of 7.3%. In that period exports increased from US $1.921 million (2011) to US $2.545 million (2015).
Also in that period, the share of agricultural shipments to the APEC regarding total Peruvian agricultural exports went from 40.2% in 2011 to 48.1% last year.
Higher demand
Within the APEC bloc, the United States and China are Peru's major buyers of agricultural products .
The US accounts for 63.6% of Peru's agricultural shipments and, in 2015, agricultural exports to the US totalled US $1,617'092,000. Meanwhile, China accounted for 5.9% of the shipments, which last year totalled US $149'664,000.
In the last five years, agricultural shipments from Peru to Asian economies recorded the highest average growth rates: Vietnam (58%), Thailand (46.3%), Chinese Taipei (29.2%), and Hong Kong (23.8%).
Some of the agricultural products that the APEC economies demand the most, include fresh grapes, asparagus, unroasted coffee, avocado, and quinoa.
Data
Some potential markets for fresh and frozen vegetables are China, United States, and Vietnam. Between 2011 and 2015, the value of banana and quinoa exports recorded average growth rates above 400%.
