Spain: 5.27 million Euro in aid to Canary tomatoes for export

The Council of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Water of the Canary Islands has set up the aid to producers of tomatoes for export under the Community Aid Programme for the Canary Islands corresponding to the 2015 campaign, with funds totalling 5.27 million Euro.

The funds, intended for a total of 685.44 hectares of crops, will go to 200 producers with crops in the Archipelago. They must be affiliated to one of the Fruit and Vegetable Producer Organizations (OPFH) and be marketing their products outside the territory of the Canary Islands. The list of beneficiaries can be found in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands: http://www.gobiernodecanarias.org/boc/2016/103/002.html

The Council and representatives of the tomato sector are working on a strategic plan for this crop, which will be based on an accurate diagnosis of the crop's strengths and weaknesses, and to which end an evaluation committee will be formed with representatives of the government and the sector.

Furthermore, the European Union has approved an amendment to the POSEI for the 2016 campaign, which involves the transfer of funds from the line for marketing support to the aid per hectare, which will go from 7,700 Euro per hectare to 11,000 Euro. The goal is to prevent the loss of acreage and strengthen direct support to the product.
