Peru's Central Reserve Bank (BCR) confirmed the growth trend experienced in exports of agricultural products in the country, as these exports increased by 707.7% in 17 months.
The BCR stated that the positive trend experienced by Peruvian agricultural exports could increase in the future due to the cultivation of high value-added products and the constant search for new markets for the Peruvian products conducted by public and private organizations.
According to experts, the main reasons for the growth in exports are the increase in harvested area, which went from 353,000 hectares in 1998 to 825,000 hectares in 2015, product diversification, as non-native species have been planted, the increase in production of fruits and vegetables that are highly demanded by the international market, new irrigation systems, and the gradual renewal of coffee plantations.
The Central Bank is confident exports will continue to rise in the coming months and expects agro-food exports in 2016 to have revenues of 7,000 million dollars (6,270 million Euro).
The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation of Peru recently reported that Peru was already among the top ten food suppliers in the world.
