Moldova hit by severe drought

Severe drought is currently affecting Moldova and the Romanian region of Oltenia, where soil water reserves are close to crisis levels, according to the National Meteorological Administration. If it doesn't rain in the short-medium term, the investments from numerous agricultural producers may go down the drain.

In Vaslui, for example, not a drop of rain has fallen for the past two months. Plants have not grown enough and wheat and corn growers for example, estimate they will fail to achieve even half of last year's production. Similar losses are expected by growers in Suceava and Bacau.

In Suceava, not only corn or wheat producers are concerned, but also potato growers. On average, they estimate that one third of their production could be compromised.

To make matters worse, producers cannot rely on any help from the state.
Gigel Crudu, Director for Agriculture in Vaslui, said that "after 2010, the Romanian state is no longer able to compensate, because it is considered state aid and, under EU rules, they are prohibited from doing so."
