Honduran banana exports increased 9.1% in revenue and 12.5% in volume

According to a report by Honduras’ Central Bank, the country's banana exports increased by 9.1% in revenue and 12.5% in volume in January when compared to the same month of 2014.

In January, Honduran banana sales abroad amounted to $36.9 million dollars, 9.1% more than the $33.8 million dollars made in the same month of 2014.

The volume of banana exports during the first month of this year was 2.7 million boxes of 18 kilos, i.e. 12.5% more than the 2.4 million boxes exported in the same month last year, stated the document.

According to the report, last January the price of a box of bananas averaged $13.62, while in January 2014 they were sold at an average of $13.98.

The United States, which bought 96.2% of all the bananas sold in January (slightly more than 2.6 million cases), continues to be the main destination for Honduran banana exports, followed by Central America with 78,900 boxes.

The third destination is Europe, with 21,300 cases, said the Central Bank of Honduras.

According to official figures, banana exports, one of Honduras' major agricultural products, amounted to $456 million dollars in 2014, i.e. 7% less than the $490.1 million dollars sold in 2013.
