Burkina Faso expects 2.3 million ton harvest from dry season

Burkina Faso expects a 2.3 million ton harvest over the 2015 dry season. This season aims "to promote irrigation for prosperous agricultural activities" in order to improve food and nutritional safety in Burkina Faso.

2,392,638 tons of produce are expected, of which 1,645,000 tons are from vegetable crops, 37,000 tons cereal, 66,000 tons tubers, 644,000 tons fruit and 638 tons from protein crops and oilseed.

"We want production over the dry season to overcome the deficit in food needs and allow households to have the income to buy on the market", says Francois Lompo, the Minister of Agriculture.

The government has decided to support the producers by making, with subsided costs, about 4,053 tons of fertiliser, 498 motor pumps, 11,000 tubes of PVC and 175 irrigation kits available to them. The current campaign will allow them to set up and rehabilitate 244 hectares of irrigated land and 967 hectares of low-land.
