German consumer consumed 9.1 kg apples on average in 2013

The German apple harvest is still in full swing, but it's already clear that 2014 will be a good apple year, German website Fruchthandel.de reports. In the past year, every German consumer consumed 9.1 kg of apples on average.

That makes the apple the number 1 most popular fruit variety in Germany, according to the 'Bundesvereinigung der Erzeugerorganisationen Obst und Gemüse e.V.' (BVEO). The most popular apple varieties are Elstar, Jonagold and Braeburn. About 40% of the total harvest is comprised of this trio, according to the BVEO. "The range and taste differences of the fruit are significantly larger, however. Between Lake Constance and the Niederelbe, over 20 different apple varieties grow, ranging in taste from fruity-sweet to sour-spicy. And thanks to short transport distances, these healthy all-rounders end up crunchy on the table", says the BVEO.
