Consumers in Navi Mumbai are experiencing an increase in potato prices, a situation attributed to reduced arrivals from both within and outside the state. The Mumbai Agricultural Produce Market Committee (MAPMC)'s onion-potato market has seen a significant rise in potato prices due to the reduced supply. In the Vashi wholesale market, while onion prices have stabilized, potato prices have escalated to Rs. 20 to Rs. 25 per kilogram from the usual Rs. 10 to Rs. 15. Retail prices have climbed to Rs. 30 per kilogram.
Traders believe the current price increase is temporary, resulting from a significant supply-demand gap. A shift in cultivation patterns, with many farmers opting for garlic over potatoes due to last year's price surge in garlic, has led to a decline in potato production. This shift has caused a supply shortage, with farmers now obtaining favorable prices for potatoes in local markets, thereby diverting produce away from larger markets like Mumbai.
