Technical Director - Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

The Perennial Foods Group (PFG) is a specialty food company that produces and sources high-value, organic food products through a network of small-scale outgrowers. By promoting regenerative agricultural practices and managing a vertically integrated supply chain, PFG’s mission is to bring sustainable food products to global customers, while helping grow sustainable farms and livelihoods for our Partner Farms.

Our organic fresh produce is exported year-round to premium retailers and wholesalers in the UK, EU and Middle East. Our herbs supply our recently launched consumer tea brand, Kib. The company plans to expand across Ethiopia and East Africa, linking thousands of smallholders to high-value global markets.

As a member of the Executive Team, the Technical Director oversees all agricultural production across our sites, as the outgrower network expands from 250 to 1,000 farmers over the next number of years. In this role, you will manage three team members directly and be responsible for a team of 35+ professional staff and over 100 laborers. The position reports to the Managing Director, with regular contact with the Board of Directors.

The role:

  • You will lead all production operations, overseeing our nursery, company farmland, and out-grower network(s) as we expand in Ethiopia and East Africa
  • You will collaborate with the Sales teams to determine the annual production plan and develop the detailed planting and harvesting plans to meet customer demand
  • You will incorporate organic and regenerative practices into all of our growing operations, adapting them to the realities of smallholder agriculture
  • You will oversee research & development efforts, supervising the testing and registration of new crops, incorporating cutting-edge technology, and championing smallholder adoption efforts
  • You will lead and manage a team of +35 professional staff, motivating staff and driving performance to deliver value to the company
  • As one of three directors, you will be involved in all aspects of company leadership, strategy and decision making

 

Requirements for the role:

  • Excited by the prospect of incorporating regenerative agriculture and smallholder empowerment into a commercial production model
  • Excited to spend significant time rurally, on the ground with our farmers and growing operations
  • Experience managing commercial fresh produce or herb business units
  • Comfort with Microsoft Excel for P&L statements, budgets, and production forecasting models
  • Ability to transition from high level strategy to detailed planning to day-to-day execution

 

Preferred experience:

  • Experience growing with smallholder farms or other outgrowers
  • Experience implementing organic or regenerative growing practices
  • Experience leading teams in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment
  • Advanced Excel and Farm management software skills
  • Experience/exposure to business in sub-Saharan Africa
