Kenya announces new avocado farmer support plan

Imara Avocado Factory has outlined a new farmer-support programme in Makueni County following its participation in the Makueni Avocado Farmers Day 2025. Director Nelson Kamwaro said the initiative is aimed at strengthening Kenya's avocado value chain by improving fruit quality, yields, and market access for smallholder growers.

The programme includes direct purchases of avocados from registered farmers, with the company stating that transparent pricing is intended to reduce reliance on intermediaries. Financial assistance for certified seedlings will be made available to help growers expand orchard capacity and improve productivity. The company will also offer agronomy training covering cultivation practices, post-harvest handling, irrigation, crop nutrition, and sustainability.

According to Kamwaro, "Our goal is to ensure that Makueni farmers not only have a reliable market for their produce but also the tools and knowledge to grow premium-quality avocados that meet global standards." He said the approach is designed to support growers while aligning with broader avocado sector development plans.

Avocado demand continues to grow in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, positioning Kenya as a competitive exporter. The company noted that improved coordination between farmers and processors could help regions such as Makueni increase participation in international markets. Kamwaro added that "strong partnerships with farmers are the backbone of every successful agricultural value chain."

The company is considering collaborations with other counties and agricultural agencies to support sustainable production practices, strengthen traceability, and maintain Kenya's reputation as a supplier of avocado products.
